Fiat Ritmo Abarth Gr.2In 1980 the Monte-Carlo Rally was won by a Fiat: the 131 Abarth by Walter Röhrl. However, this was not the only Fiat to shine on the slippery and tricky stages of the "Monte-Carl’". The little Ritmo, competing in Group 2, was also present at the start. It too drove with the superb official blue and white livery. At the wheel, Attilio Bettega put in a solid performance and landed a fine 6th place in the middle of Group 4. This somewhat made up for his forfeit from the previous year.

Volkswagen Golf Mk.2 GTI 16V Gr.AIn the early 1980s, a Swedish driver named Kenneth Eriksson stood out behind the wheel of an Opel Kadett. In 1986, he was recruited by Volkswagen Motorsport as an official driver. A status he would not leave until his final WRC season in 2002 with Skoda. After a first break-in season at the wheel of the Golf Mk.2 GTI 16V, Kenneth Eriksson managed to develop the full potential of the little German car the following season. In Monte-Carlo 1987, the Swede won a superb 5th place. Enough to propel this Golf into the legend of the "Monte-Carl’". This would just be the start of some outstanding results for the Eriksson / Volkswagen Golf duo. The driver would finish 4th in the championship with a victory at the Safari, which is no small feat!
